Rays sweep out Yankees.

This is The Sports Reset for Thursday October 8th

In the MLB playoffs, the Tampa Bay Rays eliminated the New York Yankees 4 to 3 in Game 3, completing a sweep and reaching their first ALCS since 2020. Rookie Victor Mesa Jr. broke a tie with a two-run homer in the sixth, and Bryan Baker struck out Trent Grisham with the tying run on second for the final out. The Los Angeles Dodgers ended the Atlanta Braves’ season 4 to 1 in Game 4; Andy Pages drove in the winning runs with a seventh-inning single, sending Los Angeles to a third straight NLCS. The Milwaukee Brewers eliminated the San Diego Padres 3 to 1 in Game 4 after Garrett Mitchell robbed Manny Machado of a tying two-run homer in the eighth. The Cleveland Guardians stayed alive against the Chicago White Sox with a 9 to 3 Game 3 win. In the WNBA semifinals, the Atlanta Dream beat the New York Liberty 101 to 98 in overtime for a 2 to 0 series lead, and the Golden State Valkyries edged the Las Vegas Aces 83 to 81 for a 2 to 0 lead. In the NHL, the Washington Capitals beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5 to 3 in Alex Ovechkin’s final home opener.

Looking ahead, the Guardians and White Sox meet Thursday in MLB’s ALDS Game 4, with Chicago leading the series 2 to 1. Jo Adell and José Ramírez each drove in multiple runs with two-out triples Wednesday, giving Cleveland life after it produced only three runs across the first two games. In the NFL, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit the Dallas Cowboys, and winless Tampa Bay gives undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels his second start because Baker Mayfield remains out with a dislocated throwing thumb. In the NHL, the Vancouver Canucks open a six-game trip against the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, whose Sebastian Aho has four goals in four games. Then Sunday, the Dodgers visit the Brewers to open the NLCS, a rematch of last year’s sweep. Off the field in the NFL, the Philadelphia Eagles traded two-time Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens for a 2027 fifth-rounder and a 2028 second-rounder.
