Cristiano Ronaldo tied it from the spot for his first World Cup knockout goal, Goncalo Ramos won it with a 94th-minute header, and Croatia had a late equalizer wiped out after review. Spain also moved on, beating Austria 3 to 0 behind two Mikel Oyarzabal goals and a Pedro Porro header, setting up Spain-Portugal next. Switzerland handled Algeria 2 to 0 to keep its tournament alive.

In MLB, the LA Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 12 to 7 in a loud NL West game, while the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6 to 1. In WNBA play, the Phoenix Mercury rolled past the Seattle Storm 90 to 67, and the Washington Mystics edged the Atlanta Dream 81 to 76.

Looking ahead, the World Cup Round of 32 keeps moving Friday with Egypt against Australia at AT&T Stadium, Cape Verde against Argentina at Hard Rock Stadium, and Ghana against Colombia at Arrowhead.
