Belgium Ends The U.S. Dream

In the World Cup Round of 16, Belgium beat the United States 4 to 1 at Lumen Field, ending the United States tournament with a heavy knockout loss. The score tells the story clearly: Belgium created separation, protected it, and turned a tense elimination game into a result the United States could not chase down.

Spain also moved on, edging Portugal 1 to 0 at AT&T Stadium in a tighter Round of 16 match where one goal was enough.

In MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers survived Colorado Rockies 8 to 7, while Washington Nationals outlasted Houston Astros 12 to 11 in the wildest baseball score of the day. New York Yankees handled Tampa Bay Rays 5 to 1, and Kansas City Royals rolled past Philadelphia Phillies 15 to 1.

In WNBA play, Connecticut Sun beat Minnesota Lynx 90 to 89, the kind of one-point road win that stands out on any regular-season night.

Looking ahead, the World Cup Round of 16 continues today with Egypt against Argentina at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, then Colombia against Switzerland at BC Place, with two more quarterfinal places on the line.

In MLB, Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals have a doubleheader at Busch Stadium, starting with Game 1 as the makeup from May 5, then closing with Game 2 later today.
