Argentina Breaks England

In the World Cup semifinals, Argentina advanced and England was eliminated with a 2 to 1 comeback at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Lionel Messi did not score, but he set up both late goals after Anthony Gordon had put England in front, and Lautaro Martinez came off the bench to head in the winner after the 85th minute. Argentina is now headed to a second straight World Cup final, with Spain waiting Sunday. In the WNBA, the Golden State Valkyries handled the Indiana Fever 88 to 75, while the Minnesota Lynx beat the Los Angeles Sparks 96 to 87.

Looking ahead, golf gets the day started with The Open underway at Royal Birkdale, where Thomas Detry is out front at 3 under, with Joe Dean and Alex Fitzpatrick sitting one shot back. The final major of the season runs through Sunday, and Scottie Scheffler’s title defense plus Rory McIlroy’s chase give the weekend some real weight. The Corales Puntacana Championship is also on the board, with Richie Ramsay, Fabián Gómez, and Séamus Power opening at even par. In MLB, the New York Mets visit the Philadelphia Phillies, with Juan Soto’s matchup against Aaron Nola giving that NL East game an immediate bat-versus-arm angle. In the WNBA, the Portland Fire visit the Washington Mystics, and the New York Liberty go to the Dallas Wings. Sunday brings the World Cup final, Argentina against Spain.
