Mets power up!

In MLB, the New York Mets opened the second half by beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 1, with Francisco Alvarez driving the offense with two solo homers. Christian Scott gave New York 5 and two-thirds scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, Brett Baty went back-to-back with Alvarez in the seventh, and Devin Williams finished it for his 100th career save. The only Phillies run came on a Trea Turner homer in the eighth.

In the WNBA, the Portland Fire beat the Washington Mystics 75 to 56, with Carla Leite scoring 14 and Portland holding Washington to 29 percent shooting. Shakira Austin had 19 and nine for the Mystics, but the Fire controlled it early with a 28 to 13 first quarter.

Looking ahead, in MLB, the Los Angeles Dodgers visit the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for a weekend series with real star power and some extra history, because it is their first meeting in the Bronx since the Dodgers clinched the 2024 World Series there. Roki Sasaki is lined up opposite Gerrit Cole, and Shohei Ohtani is expected in the Dodgers lineup as Los Angeles tries to shake off a three-game skid against a Yankees team that won four straight before the break.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox also have a doubleheader at Fenway Park, with Game 1 making up the May 9 postponement.

In golf, The Open rolls into its next round with Matt Wallace, Pierceson Coody, and Daniel Brown all sitting at 4 under, while the Corales Puntacana Championship has Todd Clements and Ivan Cantero sharing the lead at 7 under.

In the WNBA, the Seattle Storm visit the Indiana Fever, where Kelsey Mitchell’s scoring run and Caitlin Clark’s playmaking keep Indiana in the center of the Friday night conversation.
