Turner powers Philly!

In MLB, the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10 to 7, with Trea Turner driving the night. Turner hit two homers, knocked in five, added the 200th homer and 300th double of his career, and helped the Phillies absorb Mookie Betts’ two-homer answer for the Dodgers. The New York Yankees beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8 to 5 behind two Jazz Chisholm Jr. homers and five RBIs, while the Cleveland Guardians rolled past the Minnesota Twins 13 to 4 with seven home runs, including two each from Petey Halpin and Rhys Hoskins.

In the WNBA, the New York Liberty edged the Dallas Wings 99 to 98 in overtime as Breanna Stewart had 33 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists, and Sabrina Ionescu scored 12 in overtime. The Las Vegas Aces also beat the Toronto Tempo 109 to 83. In WTA tennis, Mayar Sherif won the Iasi Open final after Paula Badosa retired in the second set.

Looking ahead, MLB stays in the center of the day, and Los Angeles Dodgers at Philadelphia Phillies is the cleanest follow-up after Monday’s power show. Zack Wheeler is lined up for the Phillies against Justin Wrobleski, and the first question is whether Philadelphia’s lineup can keep punishing mistakes after Turner, Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh, and Derek Hill all went deep. The Pittsburgh Pirates are back at the New York Yankees after Monday’s benches-clearing finish, so that one carries a little extra edge.

The San Diego Padres visit the Atlanta Braves, the New York Mets are at the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Cincinnati Reds get another shot at the Seattle Mariners after being shut out Monday. Later this week, Phillies-Yankees opens Friday, giving the weekend a bigger-market baseball series with real playoff-race texture.
