Swiatek takes the title, Steelers beat Packers, Schwarber powers Phillies, Aces secure playoff berth ... and more for August 14th
Swiatek takes the title!
This is The Sports Reset for Friday August 14th
In WTA tennis, seventh-seeded Iga Swiatek beat second-seeded Elena Rybakina in straight sets, 6 2, 6 3, to win the National Bank Open. Rybakina had already captured the Australian Open this season, making Swiatek’s decisive victory even more notable. In NFL preseason action, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Green Bay Packers 28 to 9 as rookie quarterback Drew Allar produced 153 yards and three total touchdowns. In MLB, Kyle Schwarber launched two homers, including a leadoff shot into the corn, as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Minnesota Twins 7 to 1 at the Field of Dreams game. The Milwaukee Brewers scored three times in the ninth to edge the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 to 4. In the WNBA, Jackie Young scored a season-high 32 points, including 12 straight in the fourth quarter, as the Las Vegas Aces beat the Washington Mystics 83 to 76 and secured a playoff berth.
Looking ahead, NFL preseason action brings the Denver Broncos to the Atlanta Falcons, where Tua Tagovailoa is set to start in his Falcons debut during an unsettled quarterback competition. On the PGA Tour, the FedEx St. Jude Championship continues with Michael Thorbjornsen, Jordan Spieth and Kurt Kitayama tied at five under. Spieth opened with a bogey-free 65, making five birdies from holes nine through 15 as he chases a top-50 place and entry into next week’s BMW Championship. In MLB, the Brewers and Dodgers meet again in Los Angeles after Milwaukee’s late comeback Thursday. Saturday’s UFC 330 has two championship fights, with Islam Makhachev defending the welterweight belt against Ian Machado Garry and Mackenzie Dern defending the women’s strawweight title against Gillian Robertson. Beyond the scoreboard, the NBA released its new schedule, giving the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs the league-high 34 national broadcasts each.
