Mendoza gets a hard lesson!

This is The Sports Reset for Friday August 21st

In NFL preseason, the Las Vegas Raiders rallied past the Houston Texans 22 to 20. Rookie Fernando Mendoza went eight of 15 for 86 yards, and Wade Woodaz turned his overthrow into an 80-yard pick-six. Aidan O’Connell then scored on a one-yard sneak with 14 seconds left. The San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Chargers 41 to 17, helped by Jacob Cowing’s 83-yard punt-return touchdown. In MLB, the Texas Rangers shut out the Washington Nationals 2 to 0 as Jacob deGrom became the second-fastest pitcher ever by games and innings to reach 2,000 strikeouts. Abimelec Ortiz was the milestone strikeout on a first-inning slider. The Los Angeles Angels routed the Houston Astros 18 to 3, a costly stumble for a Houston club that entered Thursday leading the AL West by two games. In the WNBA, the Atlanta Dream beat the Los Angeles Sparks 124 to 88 behind Angel Reese’s nine-for-nine, 20-point, 10-rebound night. Atlanta set a franchise scoring record, while Los Angeles was eliminated from playoff contention. The Dallas Wings topped the Indiana Fever 91 to 85 despite Kelsey Mitchell’s 37 points and WNBA-record 21st consecutive 20-point game.

Looking ahead, NFL preseason continues with the New York Jets at the Pittsburgh Steelers, where Geno Smith is set for his Jets debut after a sore ankle kept him out of the opener. The 35-year-old arrived in March and is coming off a season with a league-leading 17 interceptions. The Carolina Panthers visit the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Green Bay Packers face the Denver Broncos. In MLB, the Toronto Blue Jays visit the New York Yankees, while the Atlanta Braves meet the Milwaukee Brewers. In the WNBA, the first-place Minnesota Lynx play the Washington Mystics in a meeting of playoff-position teams. On the PGA Tour, Gary Woodland, Wyndham Clark and Rory McIlroy enter the BMW Championship’s second round tied at six under. Woodland began the week 31st in the FedEx Cup standings, and his opening round included a 97-yard eagle hole-out. The playoff event continues through Sunday. On the LPGA Tour, Miyu Yamashita leads the CPKC Women’s Open at eight under, one ahead of Nasa Hataoka and two ahead of Kiara Romero. That tournament also continues through Sunday. Beyond the scoreboard, in the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers agreed to bring James Harden back on a fully guaranteed three-year, 97 million dollar contract that includes a player option and trade kicker.
