This is The Sports Reset for Tuesday August 25th
In the WNBA, the Atlanta Dream beat the Los Angeles Sparks 78 to 71, and Angel Reese pulled down a league-record 26 rebounds while adding 11 points. She passed Chamique Holdsclaw’s single-game mark of 24 and also reached 458 rebounds this season, seven beyond A’ja Wilson’s former record. Allisha Gray scored 20 as Atlanta earned its ninth straight win over Los Angeles. The Golden State Valkyries also made history, beating the Minnesota Lynx 80 to 66 for their first win in 10 meetings with Minnesota. Cecilia Zandalasini scored eight of her 18 points in the fourth, when Golden State used a 14 to 1 run to pull away. In MLB, Cal Raleigh hit three home runs and drove in four as the Seattle Mariners ended the Philadelphia Phillies’ nine-game winning streak, 9 to 2. The Texas Rangers took sole possession of the AL West lead with an 11 to 2 win over the Chicago White Sox behind Corey Seager’s three hits and three RBIs. The Chicago Cubs shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks 7 to 0 as Kevin Gausman worked seven scoreless innings.
Up next, the MLB matchup to watch is the Los Angeles Dodgers opening a three-game set at the Atlanta Braves. Los Angeles owns a four-game edge over Atlanta for the National League’s number two seed, and Tyler Glasnow is scheduled to return after more than three months out with back spasms. The Houston Astros visit the New York Yankees a half-game behind Texas in the AL West, with rookie Ethan Pecko making his second career start against Will Warren. The Pittsburgh Pirates meet the San Diego Padres in a strong pitching matchup between Paul Skenes and Michael King. In the WNBA, the Washington Mystics take a 22 and 15 record into Phoenix against the Mercury as they push for better playoff positioning. Later this week, Dodgers-Braves closes Thursday with Chris Sale scheduled against Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Off the court in the NBA, the Portland Trail Blazers are expected to be without Shaedon Sharpe for roughly six months after he tore the meniscus in his right knee during an individual offseason workout.
