In college football, the Massachusetts Minutemen stunned the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 37 to 21. Pop Watson III threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns, two to Elijah Faulkner, as UMass built a 24 to 7 halftime lead and ended the FBS’s longest active losing streak at 16 games. The Minutemen were 29.5-point underdogs, making it the sport’s largest point-spread upset since 2021. The Colorado Buffaloes edged the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 14 to 13 after Julian Lewis found Charlie Williams for a 20-yard touchdown with 42 seconds left, then Boo Carter blocked a 45-yard field-goal try at the horn. In MLB, Adley Rutschman homered twice in his return to Baltimore as the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 6 to 5, leaving the Orioles one and a half games outside the final AL wild-card spot. The Los Angeles Dodgers also slipped past the St. Louis Cardinals 3 to 2, with Freddie Freeman hitting his first homer since July 4.
Looking ahead, in MLB, the New York Yankees open a three-game series at the San Diego Padres with Max Fried carrying a 2.80 ERA into the opener. San Diego has lost seven of nine and sits a half-game behind the final National League wild-card position. In college football, the seventh-ranked Miami Hurricanes open their season at the Stanford Cardinal after finishing as national runners-up last year. The 14th-ranked USC Trojans host the Fresno State Bulldogs, with USC seeking a second straight win after scoring 42 points in its opener. Saturday brings the week’s marquee game, as the 11th-ranked LSU Tigers host the Clemson Tigers in Lane Kiffin’s debut, with Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt starting at quarterback for LSU and Christopher Vizzina taking over a rebuilt Clemson offense. Beyond the scoreboard, the Houston Rockets signed Amen Thompson to a five-year, 208 million dollar extension after the 23-year-old posted career highs of 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game.
