In college football, the seventh-ranked Miami Hurricanes opened with a 45 to 6 win over the Stanford Cardinal. Darian Mensah threw five touchdown passes in his Miami debut, while Malachi Toney set a school record with 234 receiving yards and caught three scores. The Hurricanes reached the end zone on six of their first seven drives. The 14th-ranked USC Trojans blanked the Fresno State Bulldogs 39 to 0 as Jayden Maiava passed for 349 yards and three touchdowns, and USC allowed only 116 yards. In MLB, the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5 to 2, stretching their NL East lead to five games. Chris Sale struck out seven over six innings, and Ronald Acuña Jr. collected three hits. The Cleveland Guardians swept both games of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers with walk-off wins, 7 to 6 and 4 to 3. Brayan Rocchio erased a five-run deficit in the opener with a tying grand slam and a ninth-inning homer, becoming the sixth MLB player to produce both in one game.
Looking ahead, college football’s centerpiece sends the Clemson Tigers to face the 11th-ranked LSU Tigers. Lane Kiffin makes his LSU debut with former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt leading a highly rated transfer class, while Clemson turns to Christopher Vizzina behind five new offensive-line starters. The second-ranked Oregon Ducks also host the Boise State Broncos. Oregon quarterback Dante Moore returns after throwing for 3,565 yards and 30 touchdowns last season, while Boise State counters with running backs Dylan Riley and Sire Gaines, who combined for nearly 2,000 rushing yards. In MLB, the Braves and Phillies continue their division series with Martín Pérez opposing Zack Wheeler. Later this week, the NFL season opens Wednesday with the defending champion Seattle Seahawks hosting the New England Patriots in a Super Bowl rematch. Beyond the scoreboard, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert will retire at year’s end after a seven-year tenure that included two labor agreements, major expansion and rapid growth in franchise values.
