In ATP tennis, Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton in four sets for his first US Open crown and second major of the season. In the NFL, the New York Giants opened John Harbaugh’s tenure by beating the Dallas Cowboys 28 to 20; Jaxson Dart threw three touchdown passes, two to Isaiah Likely. The Minnesota Vikings scored 29 unanswered in a 39 to 22 win over the Green Bay Packers, as Carson Wentz came off the bench and threw two scores to Justin Jefferson. And Joe Burrow threw for 254 yards and a touchdown as the Cincinnati Bengals turned four Tampa Bay Buccaneers turnovers into 24 points in a 33 to 27 win. In golf, Europe reclaimed the Solheim Cup, beating the United States 15 to 13. Rookie Lottie Woad made the putt that guaranteed Europe the required 14 and a half points, then Carlota Ciganda beat Jennifer Kupcho with two holes remaining to secure the outright title. In MLB, Cam Schlittler allowed one hit across six scoreless innings as the New York Yankees blanked the New York Mets 2 to 0. In Formula 1, Kimi Antonelli won the Spanish Grand Prix ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. In NASCAR, Kyle Larson won at World Wide Technology Raceway.
Looking ahead, the NFL brings the Denver Broncos to the Kansas City Chiefs, with Patrick Mahomes returning from the knee injury that ended his 2025 season. Denver arrives after a franchise-record 68 sacks last year, and Kansas City plans to put undrafted rookie Khalil Benson at left tackle against that rush. In MLB, the Chicago White Sox visit the Cleveland Guardians in a direct AL Central race, with Cleveland only a half-game back after Sunday’s win. The Los Angeles Dodgers are at the Cincinnati Reds, the New York Yankees visit the Minnesota Twins, the Detroit Tigers meet the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Baltimore Orioles face the New York Mets. Later this week, the NFL’s second week opens Thursday with the Detroit Lions at the Buffalo Bills and in college football Saturday, eighth-ranked LSU visits ninth-ranked Ole Miss. Off the court, Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer said the team will accept the NBA’s penalties in the Kawhi Leonard salary-cap case, including his one-year suspension, a 30 million dollar fine and five forfeited first-round picks.
