Guardians take the lead, Lions and Bills open Week 2, Jets suspend Connor Hellebuyck
Guardians take the lead!
This is The Sports Reset for Thursday September 17th
In MLB, the Cleveland Guardians moved into sole possession of first place in the American League Central by beating the Chicago White Sox 6 to 3. Petey Halpin’s three-run homer in the sixth put Cleveland ahead, while Parker Messick struck out eight over six innings. The Guardians now lead Chicago by half a game. The Texas Rangers beat the Boston Red Sox 7 to 3, and the Kansas City Royals downed the Houston Astros 5 to 2, leaving Texas and Houston tied atop the AL West. Zack Wheeler threw seven scoreless innings as the Philadelphia Phillies blanked the Washington Nationals 3 to 0. The Cincinnati Reds delayed a Los Angeles Dodgers division clinch with a 6 to 2 win behind Elly De La Cruz’s two-run homer. The Minnesota Twins edged the New York Yankees 5 to 4 in 13 innings on Victor Caratini’s walk-off single, with Aaron Judge exiting because of lower-leg tightness. The Baltimore Orioles also beat the New York Mets 7 to 1 as former Met Pete Alonso homered again at Citi Field.
Up next, the NFL opens Week 2 with the Detroit Lions visiting the Buffalo Bills in the first regular-season game at the new Highmark Stadium. Both teams are 1-and-0: Josh Allen accounted for all four Buffalo touchdowns in the opener, while Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown each scored twice for Detroit. In MLB, the Dodgers get another shot at the Reds with the National League West still unresolved, while the Phillies open a series against the Mets. In the WNBA, the Las Vegas Aces visit the Seattle Storm. On the PGA Tour, the inaugural Biltmore Championship Asheville begins Thursday, bringing tour golf back to the area for the first time in 84 years. Later this week, the Kansas City Chiefs visit the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night. Beyond the scoreboard, the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets suspended star goalie Connor Hellebuyck for failing to report to training camp amid his standing trade request.
