The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the NL West with an 8 to 2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Kyle Tucker went four-for-five with a homer, two doubles and three RBIs, helping secure the Dodgers’ 13th division title in 14 years. Elsewhere in MLB, Trevor Story’s three-run homer in the eighth lifted the Boston Red Sox past the Texas Rangers, 4 to 3, knocking Texas out of the AL West lead; the Houston Astros reclaimed that lead by beating the Kansas City Royals 6 to 2 as Yordan Alvarez hit his 40th homer. In the NFL, the Buffalo Bills beat the Detroit Lions 41 to 31 in the first regular-season game at their new stadium. Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes, ran for two more and led touchdowns on Buffalo’s first four possessions. In college football, the Pittsburgh Panthers beat the Syracuse Orange 27 to 13 behind 245 rushing yards. In the WNBA, Jackie Young scored a career-high 35 as the Las Vegas Aces beat the Seattle Storm 114 to 77, and Angel Reese had 30 points and 10 rebounds as the Atlanta Dream rolled past the Connecticut Sun 103 to 59.
Looking ahead, Friday’s college football slate is headed by No. 22 Houston Cougars at No. 13 Texas Tech Red Raiders, both 2-and-0. Houston enters ranked 22nd in offensive success rate and 18th on third downs, while Texas Tech has used both Will Hammond and Thomas Castellanos at quarterback. No. 5 Miami Hurricanes also visit the unbeaten Wake Forest Demon Deacons. In MLB, the newly crowned Dodgers welcome the San Francisco Giants while chasing baseball’s best record, and the Philadelphia Phillies visit the New York Mets. In the WNBA, the 31-and-9 Minnesota Lynx host the 24-and-16 New York Liberty. On the PGA Tour, Max Greyserman and Eric Cole share the Biltmore Championship lead at seven under, one shot ahead of Ben Kohles. Saturday brings No. 7 LSU Tigers visiting No. 8 Ole Miss Rebels. Beyond the scoreboard in the NHL, Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin said he was not ready to explain the personal reasons behind his unresolved trade request as he rehabs an upper-body injury and returns without the captaincy.
